Under supervision of the Director and day to day supervision of the Resource Manager, the position will be responsible for fire recovery/forestry related projects resulting from the Lockheed Incident.


Typical Essential Functions

Evaluate and remove hazardous trees near and adjacent to road and facility infrastructure.

Inventory, compile, and evaluate Continuous Forest Inventory data from the burn area.

Organize, mill, and store wood resulting from the burn area to support construction of the proposed Staub House field complex.

Assist in the implementation of re-forestation efforts in the burn area.

Participate in the supervision of a varying number of student interns and make work assignments to interns, coordinate assignments with the Resource Manager.

Drive vehicles and farm equipment to provide transportation and to perform work tasks. Included vehicles are two and four wheel drive on and off road, ATV, wheel and track laying tractors, backhoe, and skidder.

Perform duties, including lifting and moving of items such as lumber, rolls of fencing materials, fence posts, and bags of seed. These items will generally weigh 70 pounds or less.

Assist faculty and students with instructional, research, and land management activities; conduct tours for instructional classes of all facilities.


Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in forestry and experience related to forest inventory, hazard tree evaluation, skills to prepare professional level reports from these activities, and a broad spectrum of field skills related to forest management or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of database and word processing computer software, such as Excel and Word. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping requirements related to forest management. Ability to correspond via email and memos. Be able to operate two and four-wheel drive vehicles (including off-road travel); ATV; bulldozer; skidder, wheel tractor, sawmill; planting, cultivating, and harvesting equipment; backhoe; skidder; computers; chainsaw; and wood splitter. Be able to train students, faculty, staff and volunteers regarding use of this equipment. Good interpersonal skills for working with staff, students, faculty, and visitors. Good organizational skills. Ability to gather, evaluate and compile forest inventory data thorough professional write-ups documenting forest conditions resulting from the Lockheed Incident. Ability to identify and establish priorities. Able to train students to conduct surveys. Ability to work under adverse conditions, including outdoor work in all weather on steep terrain in the presence of ticks and exposure to poison oak. Be able to lift up to 70 lbs. Ability to read, interpret and work from reports and scientific literature, drawings, and technical manuals. Must hold a valid California driver's license, with a driving record acceptable to our insurance underwriters; and be able to obtain an advanced first aid and CPR Certificate. Occasional requests may be made to address emergency or crucial problems outside of normal work hours. Accommodating these requests will be based on the availability of the employee, unless prior on-call status is requested by the Director with at least 24 hours notice. Must have regular full time attendance.
