Typical Essential Functions

The Associate Executive Director, Finance & Business Operations will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Commercial Services and Executive Director of the Cal Poly Corporation. He/she will be responsible for administering the Corporation’s accounting systems and financials, for developing and implementing policies, strategies and new business opportunities to ensure the continued financial strength of the Corporation, for developing and fostering a customer service orientation, and building strong relationships with internal and external constituents.

The selected candidate will develop and implement long term and short term financial strategies, programs, long term financial planning, and forecasting. He/she will organize, interpret and present relevant financial data and will direct review, analysis and interpretation of financial and budget reports. This position will oversee all financial affairs for Cal Poly Corporation activities and will have management responsibility for banking and investment relations, treasury, internal and external auditing, internal controls & accounting operations, risk management, tax compliance, purchasing, disbursement, general accounting and financial systems, financial reporting, and long-range planning. It will also oversee sponsored research administration, including developing and recommending policies relating to fiscal, contract and grant management and administration.


Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting with at least ten years of increasingly responsible experience, including five years in a senior-level finance or accounting position performing similar duties which involve supervision and evaluation of department managers or supervisors in the areas of accounting, financial reporting, management, and investments. Master’s degree and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Broad-based experience in financial planning, finance, and accounting, budgeting, treasury and endowment management. Knowledge of automated commercial and fund accounting systems, internal auditing and controls, and treasury management. Familiarity with information technology strategies, trust and investment administration, sponsored projects and related fiduciary requirements. Ability to plan, organize, supervise and direct the functions of a large accounting department. Ability to assist with the management of an investment program within prescribed guidelines. Ability to do effective long range planning and interact effectively with Corporation and University managers and staff. Outstanding interpersonal and relations skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community, to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments, to foster a cooperative work environment, and to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects. Must have regular full time attendance.
